Merano

Merano. Places I love.

Merano is a city of quiet contrasts. Palm trees and mountain air, Art Nouveau architecture and alpine landscapes, Mediterranean ease and South Tyrolean down-to-earthness. The best way to discover Merano is on foot – without haste, with open eyes and time for small stops along the way.

I am from Merano. Perhaps that is why I see the city a little differently. For me, it is not only the promenades, the mountains or the architecture that make Merano special – above all, it is the people. The many small personalities who, with their ideas, shops, cafés and places, create a lively and surprisingly cool city.

Here are a few places I particularly enjoy visiting.

Ingrid Ladurner

Monocle Shop

A place to browse, discover and find inspiration. Magazines, books and carefully curated products from around the world – calm, international and with a distinctive eye for design.

And then there is Linda. Not only the best salesperson, but also one of the warmest people I have ever met. The visit is worth it for her alone.

Address:
Dantestraße 25
39012 Merano
Italy

Piano Piano Record Store

A small record shop with plenty of character. Between old and new vinyl records you often discover music you would never have searched for – the perfect place for a musical stop along the way.

The owner, Thomas, once found a record for me that I had been searching for for almost twenty years. He is not only a passionate collector but also a DJ – and if you read on, you will discover what else he does.

Address:
Passeirer Gasse 55
39012 Merano
Italy

Meteo

Light, fresh and uncomplicated. Meteo is a wonderful place for lunch before continuing to wander through the streets of Merano. Located right beside the Passer river, it is the perfect spot for a relaxed break.

Thomas and Agata run this small place with great personality: Thomas is in the kitchen, while Agata – artist and host – welcomes the guests. Their unique and charming character shapes the atmosphere of this special place.

Address:
Winterpromenade 51
39012 Merano
Italy

Gelateria Sabine

A small institution in Merano. Sabine’s ice cream is so popular that it is even mentioned in the song “Eiscreme” by Mine. A short stop that, for me, simply belongs to every walk through the city.

Address:
Garibaldistraße 19
39012 Merano
Italy

Be More

A boutique with a refined selection of fashion and special pieces – modern, minimal and thoughtfully curated.

For men as well as women. And even though I am usually not a fan of partner looks, here it might actually work.

Address:
Laubengasse 276
39012 Merano
Italy

Wandelhalle – Aperol Spritz on the Passer promenade

In the late afternoon, it is worth stopping for an aperitivo at the historic Wandelhalle along the Passer river. Palm trees, the sound of the water and the Kurhaus in the background – here Merano shows its Mediterranean side.

A place where Merano meets: in the morning for a cappuccino or a glass of white wine, later for an espresso or an Aperol Spritz. A perfect spot to watch the rhythm of the city.

Address:
Passerpromenade
39012 Merano
Italy

A walk along the Tappeiner Promenade

A walk along the Tappeiner promenade is one of the most beautiful ways to discover Merano. High above the city, the path follows sunny slopes between Mediterranean plants and old stone walls. Again and again, wide views open across the rooftops of the town.

Address (starting point):
Galileistraße 2
39012 Merano
Italy

Merano lives through its small moments: a coffee under the arcades, the scent of lemon ice cream, the late afternoon light along the promenade.

You don’t need to plan the city.
It is enough to simply let yourself drift.
